HANGOVER, OHIO

The cleverly named Hangover, Ohio is the long-distance musical friendship between Middle Tennessee State art professor and multi-instrumentalist Nick Satinover and Dayton, Ohio wordsmith Kris Neises (Kris N.). “After After All” is the duo’s third full-length recording but this musical relationship goes back much further than just three albums.

Satinover starts the backstory, “Some of the very early Kris N. stuff was recorded on my first MacBook. Some of it was also tracks Kris gave me that I just layered drums and guitar lines on top of, which is sorta what Hangover, Ohio still does. One song, "Clap Tracks" was recorded inside the Centerville (Ohio) location of Dingleberry's (a now-defunct record store where the two worked together) after hours, laptop sitting on the record stacks. Of course I had been listening to Kris and my brother (Justin Satinover of The 1984 Draft) play music since I was a youngster -- in addition to playing my wedding, their high school band played my Bar Mitzvah.”

”We have collaborated on many projects from when I was called Best Kisser (pre-Kris N.)”, Neises confirms, “and I think I made a cameo or two on Nick’s solo project Circle Circle Dot Dot. Fun fact: I played “Oscar Wilde” (from “Burning Down Belmont”) at Nick’s wedding. Nick was monumentally important to my development as an artist and songwriter.”

Neises begins to explain the work of their long-distance relationship, “The process is pretty relaxed and simple actually. There’s not much of an idea stage to the process. I feel like we kind of just dive right in and see where we end up. I have the easy job. Nick is so insanely talented and does all the instrumentation. Then he will email me the tracks and allow me to have fun and have complete freedom lyrically. For me this process has really been rewarding artistically because it forces me to move beyond my usual songwriting habits and take a new and different approach then I do with a Kris N. record.”

Satinover adds, “I am incredibly appreciative that he can take those songs, which to me sound really unfinished, and write, record and layer vocals and effects on his voice to make them feel full and complete, not to mention catchy and heartfelt. The key thing which is important for me is that we have enough respect and admiration for each other that I can make a thing and give it to him and it becomes something better without having to labor over it.”

Satinover, the art professor, gets theoretical, “I am trained as an artist and I think a lot about gestalt principles; proximity for example. Because we live apart, we have family commitments and jobs, the work is fragmented at its natural state... the album is a chance to assemble those fragments to make a whole.”

Poptek Records is proud to release “After After All”.
